Let’s Give The Newbies A Little Love

A few weeks ago I wrote about some of the new auction platforms trying to make their way into what is already a pretty crowded market. Two of them, Petrolheads and Dutch Auto Auctions, are now starting to get some interesting cars through the door.
And I thought they deserved another mention. Petrolheads has a pretty eclectic group coming up. There's a 2001 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible, a 1952 MG TD, a Plymouth Prowler, Challenger R/T Shaker, Beetle Convertible and a G55 AMG. I'm not entirely sure what the common theme is there, other than there are a few I'd happily have in my garage.
Over at Dutch Auto Auctions, where as you'll hopefully remember the prices head in the opposite direction, there are some properly interesting cars live. A Z4 M Coupe, 1971 Porsche 911T, Renault 5 Turbo 2, 1989 Mercedes 560 SEL and even a 2025 911 Carrera GTS.
Of course, getting the cars is only half the battle for any new auction platform. Now they need eyeballs.
I've always thought more competition is a good thing for this industry, particularly when someone is prepared to try something a little different. But breaking into a market with some very established players isn't easy.
So rather than talking about the same platforms every day, I thought we'd give the two newbies a little TDV love.
Go and take a look at what they've got. You might be surprised by what you find.

SOMO Takes Its Cars to Monterey
It’s been a while since we’ve checked in on Sotheby’s Motorsport, (SOMO) which I still think is one of the more interesting businesses in the online auction world, partly because I’m still not entirely sure where it ultimately fits.
RM Sotheby’s is the majority owner, while Motorsport Network, which also owns duPont Registry, is involved on the other side. That leaves SOMO sitting somewhere between two pretty big automotive businesses, and I’ve always wondered whether at some point we’ll see RM take more of a lead. You would think there’s an obvious opportunity to feed cars into SOMO that perhaps aren’t quite right for one of RM’s major live auctions, while keeping them within the wider Sotheby’s ecosystem.
Anyway, that’s probably a story for another day, because what caught my attention this week was what they were doing in Monterey.
While everyone was watching hundreds of millions of dollars change hands at the big auctions, SOMO had a selection of its online auction cars physically on display during Car Week, and interestingly, those auctions are all coming to an end today.
I’m really interested to see whether that makes any difference. We obviously spend most of our time here looking at online auctions, where buyers are making decisions from hundreds or sometimes thousands of miles away. SOMO has effectively mixed the two worlds together here. You can see the car in person during one of the biggest automotive weeks of the year, but the actual bidding and sale still happens online.
The highlight for me is this 2021 Ford GT Studio Collection, one of only 20 produced, finished in Liquid Blue with Competition Orange graphics and showing just 467 miles. It also has more than $81k in factory options, although interestingly the original carbon wheels have been replaced by Strasse wheels and aren't included.
It’s exactly the sort of car where being on display in Monterey could make a difference. Someone who might otherwise have been looking at a listing on their phone has actually been able to walk around it, inspect it and then go home and bid.
Whether that translates into more bidders or a higher final number, who knows. But with these cars closing today, we won't have to wait very long to find out.
