Who Doesn't Love a Potential Bargain?
One of the things you've always engaged with most in The Daily Vroom is our coverage of potential bargains. And who doesn't love a bargain, especially when it comes to cars!
Of course, defining what constitutes a bargain isn't particularly straightforward. A car that's cheap isn't necessarily a bargain, and something selling for considerably more money might actually be a better buy.
But over the years, I've found that most people have a pretty good idea of what they're looking for. It might be a particular make and model, or perhaps a handful of cars they've always wanted to own. What they'd really love to know is whether there's an opportunity to pick one up at a particularly attractive price.
When we launched GoAskSam last Friday, several readers asked whether we could add something specifically for bargains. I liked the idea immediately, but there was one problem.
How do you identify a potential bargain without pretending you know what the car is going to sell for?
Well, we already know what comparable cars have actually sold for, so why not use that information to identify live auctions where the bidding is currently well below those selling prices?
That's exactly what we've now added to Find on GoAskSam
Let's say you're interested in a Porsche 911. Type Porsche 911 into Find, select "Furthest below the range" from the Sort menu, and GoAskSam will show you cars where the current bidding is furthest below the selling range of comparable examples.
But here's the important part. We only show auctions ending within the next 24 hours.
Why? Because we've all watched enough online auctions to know that much of the serious bidding happens on the final day, and often in the last few minutes. There's no point showing you a Porsche with a $1 opening bid and six days left and telling you we've discovered a potential bargain!
So instead, we focus on auctions that are actually approaching the finish line.
And to give you an idea of what I'm talking about, here are two cars GoAskSam identified when I checked last night.
2024 Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS
This one certainly caught my attention. A 2024 Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS with 8,000 miles, finished in black with a red Targa roof and red leather interior, currently on Bring a Trailer.
It's a PDK car, with Sport Chrono, Burmester audio, heated and ventilated seats and plenty of other options.
When I checked, bidding was at $90,000 with approximately 13 hours remaining.
Now here's the interesting part. GoAskSam had identified 10 relevant completed sales, with comparable cars bringing $201,000 to $212,000.
That's quite a difference!
Does that mean someone is about to buy a $200,000 Porsche for $90,000? Almost certainly not. There's still plenty of time for the bidding to move, and I'd be amazed if it finished anywhere near the figure I saw.
There are also details worth investigating, including questions in the comments about previous paintwork, while the seller has confirmed that the car isn't Porsche Certified Pre-Owned.
But that's the whole point. The gap between the current bid and previous selling prices is large enough to make this a car worth watching, and you can click through to see the actual comparable sales rather than simply taking our word for it.
2008 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet
Here's a completely different example, this time over on Cars & Bids.
It's a 2008 Carrera 4S Cabriolet with a six-speed manual, approximately 100k miles and a fair number of modifications, including Bilstein suspension, HRE wheels and an aftermarket exhaust.
When I checked, the bidding was at $21,000, again with approximately 13 hours remaining.
GoAskSam had found nine relevant sales, with comparable cars selling between $37,000 and $65,000.
Now, this car has 100k miles, some modifications and two minor damage entries on its history report, all things a buyer needs to consider.
But that's exactly why I like this feature. If you're in the market for a manual 997 Carrera 4S Cabriolet, here's a car with bidding currently well below what comparable examples have sold for, and you still have time to investigate it.
Whether it turns out to be a bargain is another question entirely, but at least you know the opportunity is there.
And You Can Find Potential Bargains Near You
There's another feature we've added that I think makes this even more useful.
Once you've searched for potential bargains, you can apply a second filter to find cars within a certain distance of where you live.
At the top of Find, you can choose 100, 250 or 500 miles from your ZIP code, or select Anywhere.(so it’s a filter upon a filter)

So if you're looking for a Porsche 911, you can search for that model, sort by Furthest below the range, and then narrow the results to cars within 100 miles of home.
Or if you're happy to buy from anywhere in the country, simply select Anywhere.
And remember, you can open the comparable sales behind the range to see what similar cars actually sold for, including their mileage, dates and selling prices across different auction platforms.
You aren't being asked to trust a number without seeing the evidence.
Nor are we claiming that every car appearing in these results is going to sell below the market. Some have reserves, some will attract plenty of late bidding, and others might have issues that help explain why bidding is lower.
We're simply helping you identify cars that might deserve a closer look while there's still time to do something about it.
And this isn't limited to Porsches. You can use it for a Mustang, BMW, Ferrari or whatever else you're interested in.
We're still in the early days of GoAskSam, and I'm particularly pleased that this feature came directly from reader feedback. That's exactly how I want us to keep developing it.
Give it a try at GoAskSam.com, and please keep telling me what you'd like us to add or improve.
